I haven’t really been paying attention to the news lately because of health issues and some very bad news from the doctor, which I will not go into right now. I did hear that the Supreme Court ruled by a 5 to 4 vote on Friday that the constitution of the United States of America guarantees rights to same-sex couples to marry. You’re darn tootin’!
Why should straight people be allowed to have something, but then say that gay people can’t have it just because they are gay? It makes absolutely no sense. Why are straight people so privileged? It’s not a religious thing, obviously it’s not otherwise my Atheist aunt and uncle wouldn’t be married. It’s a human right that a couple, any couple, should be allowed to get married. And anyway, why would anyone care if Jim Bob and Billy Bob (ok I’m not very creative tonight) got married? You don’t know them, so why does their relationship matter to you?
This is a huge victory because this means that Brad Pitt can finally marry Angelina Jolie. He did say he wasn’t going to get married until EVERYONE in this country was allowed to get married, and now we can, so where’s my invitation Brad?
I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who are outraged, like a cousin of mine who made it a point to tell me in 2008 that he was voting Yes on Prop 8. He didn’t have to tell me that, but he did because he wanted to let me know that he disapproves of my relationship. I’m sorry, I don’t recall asking for his, or anyone’s permission. This is MY relationship, so if you don’t like it, that’s your problem, not mine. And personally I really could care less what anyone thinks about this ruling. Get over it! Life is too short for you to be so upset over something that doesn’t really involve you.
I think we still have a lot of work to do because we may have the FREEDOM to marry in ALL states, but there are still many states where it is perfectly legal to fire someone if they found out they are gay. If you are gay and you get married and your boss finds out, they could fire you and there’s not one thing you can do about it because it’s legal. We have to change this. There are also still going to be more suicides by CHILDREN who are bullied in school, their neighborhood or even in their own home. We have to put laws in place to make people accountable for their actions. Tell them that if they cause someone to commit suicide, the bully will go to jail. Someone has to be held accountable for causing children to kill themselves. We may be able to get married, but as long as children are dying, we are losing future doctor’s, lawyers, police officers and Hot Dog on a Stick cashiers etc.
I’ve been hearing a lot about an attack on Christianity, but personally I think being a homophobe isn’t a Christian quality, so the attack on Christianity is coming from within. Jesus Christ wasn’t homophobic, in fact he said to love thy neighbor. There is a huge attack on Christianity when a city makes it illegal to feed homeless people. Jesus Christ would definitely not approve of this. By putting people in jail for feeding homeless people, you are basically saying that Jesus Christ is a criminal for feeding the homeless in his time, and for teaching people to feed the homeless in the bible. Where is the outrage there Christians? Fox News? Come on now, get upset about the REAL issues here!
Anyway, yay for our victory, but let’s get back to work to continue to fix the messed up laws in this country.
